Gov. Sisolak Commits $5 Million to NSHE Community College Efforts

Apr 4, 2022

LAS VEGAS Gov. Steve Sisolak has committed $5 million in federal American Rescue Plan Act dollars toward exploring how the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) community colleges or other apprentice and training programs can be provided at no cost to Nevadans by 2025.
The funding will support the work of the Community College Workforce Training and Programs Committee, which was formed as a result of Assembly Bill 450 during the 2021 Legislative Session. The legislation was proposed with the intent of aligning workforce training and programs offered by community colleges, to ensure that Nevadans are trained and ready to meet current workforce demands.
The Governors financial commitment is aimed toward helping to kickstart preliminary recommendations from the committee as it conducts the fiscal and programmatic analysis needed to provide greater access to Nevadas workforce development programs.
We know that skills training is essential to our workers and businesses, Governor Sisolak said. A high school education isnt enough, and we should recognize that its no longer pre-school through grade 12, but at least pre-school through community college or other post high school training.
The committee, which is co-chaired by NSHE Chancellor Melody Rose and Cox Communications Division Vice President Sales and Market Operations Derrick Hill, is comprised of nine higher education and business and industry leaders.
