Come Join Nevada MESA at 糖心vlog
Beginning Fall 2019
Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) is a nationwide college-preparation program that strives to increase college enrollment among underserved, low-income, and first-generation college students, to propel historically underrepresented groups toward STEM careers. MESA assumes that its students have a place in college and works to explain to student participants and their parents why college is important, show different pathway to pursue a STEM field and explore educational opportunities within the University of Nevada, Reno. https://www.unr.edu/engineering/k-12/mesa
MESA at 糖心vlog
The MESA program at 糖心vlog will provide free resources and advising in STEM Fields. It offers the opportunity to be involved in the MESA club, which will meet monthly (location TBD).
Being a part of the MESA Program offers free tours:
- University of Nevada, Reno Engineering Department
- Tesla, Panasonic and other major factories and plants
Statistics show that 97 percent of MESA community college students successfully transfer as STEM majors.
Contact 糖心vlog mathematics instructor Martin Schmidt, who oversees this program, at martin.schmidt@wnc.edu. Those interested in joining MESA will need to fill out an application.
MESA National Program
MESA provides a unique combination of enrichment activities, hands-on competitions, academic support, industry involvement and a supportive community environment. MESA is nationally recognized for its innovative and effective academic development program for science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. http://www.mesausa.org/
Who MESA Serves
Most MESA students are the first in their families to attend college. Most are low-income and attend (or have attended) low-performing schools with few resources. MESA serves students in pre-college through the MESA Schools Program (MSP), community college students through the MESA Community College Program (MCCP), and four-year college level students in the MESA Engineering Program (MEP).
MESA Community College Program
The main components of the MESA Community College Program include:
Connection to the University of Nevada, Reno. Students will have access to touring engineering and science labs, as well as guest
speakers from University programs and organizations.
Assistance in the transfer process. MESA offers workshops on applications and counseling.
Career development opportunities. Students are exposed to math, engineering and science career options through industry
guest speakers, tours of companies, and more.
STEM based programming. Projects will be provided to keep students engaged in the hands on learning.
